Saiyok Attractions Print E-mail

The Sai Yok District is 60 kms north of the provincial capital.  Its landscape, generally rich in forests and mountains, is dotted with many natural attractions and historical places.

Prasat Muang Sing Historical Park

The ancient site is 43 kms out of Kanchanaburi on the bank of the Kwai Noi River on Highway 323.  The principal structure, the Khmer Prasat Msaiyok_forest_imagesuang Sing (Tower of the City of Lions), is believed to have been the western most outpost of the Angkor-centere Khmer empire.  A wide range of artifacts including temple carvings, religious statues, implements, and pottery shards indicate the once-thriving city must have been inhabited from approximately the 12th to14th centuries.

 

 

Sai Yok Noi Waterfallkanchanaburi_falls

Also known as Khao Phang Waterfall, about 60 kilometers from town on Highway 323.  The roadside cascade is best visited between July  -  September,  when water is most plentiful.  Visitors can take a train from town to Nam Tok Station and continue by local transport to the waterfall, which is 2 kms away.

 

 

Hell Fire Pass Memorial Museum

This is located some 80 kms north-west of the town on Highway 323.  To commemorate all those who died in the Pacific during the Second World War, the Australian Government in cooperation with the Government of Thailand, has provided this interpretive memorial, the Hell Fire Pass Memorial Museum, and walking trails.  This museum explains to visitors the story of why and how the railway was built and attempts to convey the hardships and suffering endured by so many who were forced to work in extremely harsh conditions.  The museum symbolized the importance of this site to Australian people.  It also reflects the enduring bonds of friendship that have grown between the people of Thailand and those nations whose citizens worked on the Burma-Thailand railway.


Sai Yok Yai Waterfallsaiyok_yai_lek_waterfall_images

This flows directly into the Kwai Noi River, and is the most popular attraction in the 300 sq.kms of Sai Yok National Park.  Its idyllic beauty has been repeatedly celebrated in Thai poetry and song.  Wildlife in Sai Yok's deciduous forests include small mammals such as bats, squirrels and deer, and numerous bird species, including wreathed hornbills and blue-winged pittas.  The waterfall is 104 kms from Kanchanaburi and can be reached either by boat or car on highway 323.  Bungalow accommodation, river rafts and camping facilities are available.

Lawa Cave

75  kilometers from town, and about 50 meters from Kwai Noi riverside. Visitors may take boats from Pak Saeng Pier or by car across the bridge at Ban Kaeng Ra Boed.  It is the biggest interesting cave in the area and has stalactites and stalagmites. It offers an exciting adventure.

Dao Wa Dung Cavesaiyok_cave

Located about 1 kilometer near the bank of Kwai Noi River, 110 kilometers from the city, visitors can go by boat from Pak Saeng Pier or Sai Yok Yai Waterfall.  Stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave are wonderful and make the beautiful scene.

Kra Sae Cave

Situated at the curving Kwae Noi River, a wooden viaduct of the "Death Railway", on the bank of Kwae Noi River, about 55 kilometers out of town. This cave is where a Buddha image placed inside.

 

 

The Bridge Over the River Kwaibridge_over_river_kwai

Internationally famous, thanks to several motion pictures and books, the black iron bridge was brought from Java by the Japanese Army and reassembled under Japanese supervision by Allied prisoners of war as part of the 'Death Railway' linking Thailand with Myanmar.  Still in use today, the bridge was the target of frequent Allied bombing raids during 1945, and was rebuilt after the war ended.  The curved spans of the bridge are the original sections.

War Museum

The museum, located near the River Kwai Bridge, displays the collection of weapons, tools and utensils of the Allied prisoners of war and Japanese soldiers during the Second World War.

The JEATH War Museumjeath_museum

This enclave in the riverside precincts of Wat Chaichumphon had been constructed largely in the form of an Allied prisoners of war camp.  The name JEATH is derived from Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand, and Holland.  The thatched detention hut with cramped, elevated bamboo bunks contains photographic, pictorial, and physical memorabilia dating from the Second World War.


Town Gate

This is the remains of Kanchanaburi town built in 1833 during the reign of King Rama III. It is located on Lak Muang Road near the meeting point of the Kwai Yai and Kwai Noi Rivers.

The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery

On Saeng Chuto Road, opposite the railway station, it contains the remains of 6,982 prisoners of war who perished during the construction of the "Death Railway".

The Chong Kai War Cemeterysaiyok_cemetary

2 kilometers south of town, on the bank of the Kwai Noi River, this occupies the former site of the Chong Kai Prisoner of War Camp. This second cemetery is more peaceful, attractively landscaped, and contains some 1,750 remains.

Wat Tham Mankhon Thong

Situated 4 kilometers from town on the bank of the Kwai Noi River. It is well known for the incredible performance of the nun floating in a deep pool. There is a small museum where a variety of ancient objects found in the area are on display.

Wat Tham Phu Wa

The monastery in natural surroundings, famous for meditation, is 15 kilometers away from the provincial capital. There is a beautiful cave with plenty of stalactites.

Somdet Phra Sri Nakarin Park

Situated in Kanchanaburi’s Agricultural College at Tambon Nong Ya, 9 kilometers from town, it is also known as "the Stone Garden" which abounds with stones of different sizes and shapes.

Wat Tham Sua and Wat Tham Khao Noi

Located at Tambon Muang Chum, 4 kilometers beyond Wachiralongkorn Dam, these two adjacent temples house very beautiful Thai and Chinese style buildings and huge Buddha images situated on the mount.

Wat Pa Lelai

This monastery is 18 kilometers away from the provincial capital. It is located at Tambon Lat Ya which once was an ancient border town involved in battles between the Thai and the Burmese during the Ayutthaya period to the early Bangkok period. Another nearby temple called Wat Khun Phaen houses a ruined pagoda dating back to the early Ayutthaya period.

Kanchanaburi Cultural Centre

The collection center of human life styles from the past till the present is displayed at the Rajpatara Institute of Kanchanaburi, 14 kilometers out of town on the route to Sai Yok.

Ban Kao National Museum

The museum, some 35 kilometers from town, was constructed beside a Neolithic burial site discovered by Dutch prisoners of war during the construction of the "Death Railway". Specimens of Neolithic remains are on display.
